About Us

Global "Gurukul" of River Science

The Centre for Narmada River Basin Management (cNARMADA), initiated by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aims to study the Condition Assessment and Management Plan (CAMP) for the Narmada River basin. The study is conducted jointly by IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Indore (consortium institutes) and the progress is monitored by cGanga at IIT Kanpur. The project’s main objective is to develop an integrated river basin management plan for the restoration and conservation of the wholesomeness of the river by improving its ecological health substantially, which has been significantly affected by the competing human demands for river resource uses in the entire river basin. This entails the assessment of the existing conditions of the river and preparing a road map for comprehensive rejuvenation and conservation of the riverine ecosystems by analysing anthropogenic impacts on them in detail. The studies and management plan are to enable the rivers to perform their essential and desirable functions, concentrating on five pillars:

● Continuous River Flow (Aviral Dhara),

● Unpolluted River Flow (Nirmal Dhara),

● Longitudinal and Lateral Connectivity,

● Adequate Space for all Essential River Functions

● Functioning of the River as an Ecological Entity
